The Invention Works™
Branding and printed collateral for a 3D printing startup based in London.
An innovative startup. The team developed their own high resolution 3D printer and software. Their mission is to open-up the latest technologies to schools and colleges, designer-makers, and hobbyists.
Brand creation. The Invention Works commissioned us to design them a compelling identity to launch their brand, their 3D printer, and their community programme.
Consultation and strategy. We worked closely with the founders to establish a unique brand: from meetings focused on branding, to developing digital strategies to launch and grow the company.
Paying attention to details
Every part of the identity we created for The Invention Works has been carefully considered. Take the typography for example: it’s curved corners and soft appearance echo the design of the hardware. It’s geometric shapes suit the building-block style product, whilst it’s cost-effective payment options are perfect for a young startup.
Flexible, modular branding
We developed a modular strategy that The Invention Works could use as their brand grew. We discussed their future plans — including online communities, desktop applications, and workshops — and designed a system that would let them brand each area of their business. This modular structure lets them bolt-on a bespoke icon to the primary logo, reinforcing the brand at every stage.
brand development
Creating a brand people love
When The Invention Works launched, 3D printing was exciting but only really available for the few. Part of the brand’s mission was to open up the technology to as many people as possible — from school children to independent designer makers. The concept behind our branding was to develop an identity that was warm and accessible to all.
Alternate logos
We designed a series of alternate logos — some optimised for small sizes, and others for promotional materials. This flexible approach lets The Invention Works be varied with their output, but always remaining on brand. It also helps them target different demographics — what's best for post graduates might not be suited for primary school children.
Guidelines for the future
As a young startup, The Invention Works couldn’t afford full time designers, so we created a comprehensive set of brand guidelines and document templates. It included common-sense advice to ensure their band identity remains consistent and professional, helping them use assets with confidence.
strategy
Developing a cohesive business
We worked closely with founders during the design and development of their identity to form a strong strategy that covered branding, digital and their new hardware. We advised the team on design and production choices for their 3D printer, and how to develop their unique digital approach.
printed collateral
We designed a full range of business stationery, including as business cards, letterheads and document templates. We also provided The Invention Works with fun promotional print, like stickers and even wallpaper for their offices based on a pattern made up of their colourful icons.
